Project Overview
In Uganda and particularly in Kasese district, most families especially in rural hard to reach areas are living in very vulnerable situations that they can’t often afford to pay school fees because of poverty and lack of access to productive and profitable business ventures and income generating activities. Education is not free and many families cannot afford it, yet it is the surest medium of girls and women empowerment and transition from poverty and uncertain situation.
Most at times, the parents don’t believe in educating a girl child, it’s a cultural belief, this has contributed to gender inequalities leaving the girls and women behind and in very vulnerable situations.
As A4CY-U, we believe that a girl who drops out of school will eventually end up becoming a victim of teenage pregnancy or child marriage because she has to find a way to survive. We implemented a Back-to-School Program to girls a second chance opportunity to achieve their dream and fulfil their destiny’s.
How It Worked
Bearing in mind that there are many girls needing help as a result of helplessness and vulnerability, we worked closely with different community structures and stakeholders to identify beneficiary girls, A4CY-U subjected the identified girls to an assessment form to select the rightful beneficiaries. This was followed by an orientation of beneficiaries and their parents, for them to understand and support this initiative.
Numerous trainings took place to prepare the girls to go back to school, and the challenges that they are likely to face and how to overcome them. We then enrol them to a school where we have secured admissions and have signed MoU’s with. The girls were supported with school fees, scholastic materials, and continued guidance, mentorship and life skills training.
A4CY-U supported 11 girls who had given birth and previously involved in child marriage, studying from Bwesumbu Peas High Secondary school. They sat for their senior four (S4) Uganda certificate of Education (UCE). 7 out of the 11 supported girls passed their exams and qualified to enrol for A’ Level and certificate courses.
Six out of the 11 beneficiary girls have furthered their education and has a chance to realize her dreams and full potential.
Above are beneficiary girls who were supported in the year 2023 during the second chance education activity, below are the girls who passed their UCE exams and qualified for next level of education.
